Shaun Mathen may be a familiar name to some readers; he is a local physician board certified in Osteopathic and Integrative Medicine and has been a guest speaker for one of our panel evenings. We have also featured an interview with him (click here to read) in a previous newsletter where he discussed the benefits of fasting and eating for the right reasons. Dr. Mathen recently completed the Ayurvedic Health Counseling program at Milwaukee’s Kanyakumari School of Ayurveda. We are very pleased to announce that he will begin offering this consultation at Creative Therapeutics!
Dr. Mathen practices integrative medicine. Essentially, this means he combines traditions: traditional Western medicine reinforced by traditional, ancient Eastern approaches to healing. While certain terms or metaphors from the Eastern traditions may sound “exotic” to some some Western ears, they are rooted in both tried-and-true practice and common sense. They are not contradictory, but complementary approaches to overall health and longevity. Talk to Dr. Mathen for a couple minutes, and you will find his passion for the study and practice of Ayurvedic medicine to be both evident and contagious and informed by scientific inquiry.
Thousands of years before modern medicine began to document the connection between mind and body, the Ayurvedic system of health was developed in India. Ayurveda (ayur = life; veda = science/knowledge) recognizes that no two human beings are the same; thus, what may work for one may not work for another–one size does not fit all. The scope of an Ayurvedic Health Counselor involves improving the digestion of food and emotion (Dr. Mathen discusses the link between the two in our interview), helping the individual process both, making adjustments where necessary to achieve optimal balance.
In Ayurveda, the idea is that we are composed of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. Balance is the key principle: if these elements are not balanced within the body, one will experience not ease but dis-ease. Undigested foods and lingering worries and fears begin the cascade of disease when these elements are not in balance. An ayurvedic counselor helps you identify what elements may be lacking or in excess in your body. Some conditions with which ayurvedic counseling can assist: Indigestion, gas, mild constipation, irregular appetite, worry, fear, self-sabotaging emotions, anger, depression, insomnia.
