The first thing to learn about Yoga Nidra is that there is no wrong way to do Yoga Nidra. While certain kinds of yoga may not be for everyone, anyone can do Yoga Nidra. If you can lay down, you can do Yoga Nidra. (And if you have trouble laying down, accommodations can be made).

Roughly translated as a “wakeful sleep,” Yoga Nidra occupies a space somewhere between a shavasana (the final resting pose in most yoga classes) and a guided meditation. In fact, it is often described as meditation for those who struggle with meditation, or perhaps a method to prepare one to be able to meditate.

Instructor Amy Prais, RYT, recently completed a course in teaching Yoga Nidra, and she is excited to bring it to Creative Therapeutics for its debut. The cost of the class is a mere $15–regular students may use their virtual punch card!

What can you expect? Participants will lie comfortably on the floor (or whatever position of maximum comfort works for you). Your instructor will ask you to prepare a single, positive intention for that session; for example: “I will recover from this injury and be stronger than ever!” “I am a successful student/businessperson/parent!” “I will return to Hawaii this year,” “I am free of past anxieties,” etc. There’s no limit. Using your imagination is encouraged–feel free to be as practical and focused or as far-flung as you need! Just own your intention for that session.

You will then be guided through an awareness of your body in the moment–much as you might in another form of guided meditation.

While it is not quite the same thing as meditation, strictly speaking, Yoga Nidra boasts the many of the same benefits. It has been used to help people with insomnia and PTSD. It can also help people feel more alert. Certainly, it is a wonderful tool for letting go of stress and living in the moment. It represents a simple yet profound way to care for ourselves, a way to create a foundation on which to thrive.
