If you ever wanted to try meditation, try our monthly Yoga Nidra class. Yoga Nidra (“yogic sleep”) is a kind of guided meditation that was developed to help people cope with issues such as trauma, PTSD, anxiety, insomnia, but it can be a tool for relaxation and stress relief and building awareness of the connection between the brain and the body.
There are no poses to learn for Yoga Nidra; however, our classroom opens early at 5:30 PM for those who would like to practice their own yoga or just stretch out, relax and get ready for the meditation. During the meditation, you’ll simply lie down (or sit comfortably, if you prefer) as instructor Amy Prais, RYT, guides you through a meditation designed to bring awareness. While meditation can sometimes sound lofty and abstract, it’s actually quite down to earth and practical. For example, physical tension in our body can correlate to stressors in our lives, often without us being conscious of the connection. Bringing awareness to these areas helps us identify these issues and work with them.
Meditation does take practice. It is difficult to “quiet the mind;” a trained instructor like Amy helps us focus on the present and bring our awareness back from wandering. When practiced, meditation can be a profoundly transformative tool, which is why more and more medical practitioners are studying it, adopting it and incorporating it into treatments.
Held on the first Friday of each month, Yoga Nidra is a great way to end your week and start the weekend. And it’s only $15 to walk-in (regular students may use their punch card).
