We all want to be able to do what we want to do when we want to do it. Realistically, most of us can’t expect to retain the boundless energy and rubbery resilience we took for granted as children. However, we also don’t need to look at getting older as an inevitable loss of function. Of course, schedules, stresses, circumstances and habits of our lives make taking care of ourselves challenging. We all have different bodies, different life circumstances–how do we age the best we can?

As physical therapists, we have a unique, day-to-day perspective on the common ways people maintain or lose their optimal function and we look for ways to help our patients regain and even improve function. So we’re introducing a series of videos on our social media (Facebook and Instagram) about aging expertly.

Ankle strength is a key component of stability, balance and mobility

Each video will introduce a short exercise or tip addressing the most common ways we help ourselves stay healthy as we age. We’ll look at things like kyphosis (rounding of the upper back), hip and ankle strength, breathing, and balance. These represent areas we frequently teach our patients about, and they represent specific areas that tie in to the overall picture of health for your body.

Some of my clients complain when I ask them to lift their foot. I tell them, “You don’t have to think about this as ‘exercise.’ Think about when you’re stepping into a bathtub or playing with your grandkids–don’t you want to be able to do this?”

So follow our series through Facebook or Instagram–but more importantly, tell us what you think. What does aging expertly mean to you? What have you learned along the way? Are there any topics you’d like us to address?
